Common Questions About Counseling

Helpful Answers & Information

Here are answers to the questions clients ask most often about starting therapy with Allen Counseling Group, PLLC.

A number of benefits are available from participating in therapy. Therapists provide support, problem-solving skills, and enhanced coping strategies for issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship troubles, unresolved past trauma, grief, stress management, and body image concerns. Therapy helps you attain a better understanding of yourself and your values, develop skills for improving relationships, learn new ways to cope with stress, and boost self-esteem.

Everyone goes through challenging situations in life. While you may have navigated past difficulties on your own, seeking extra support when you need it demonstrates commendable self-awareness. Taking responsibility by accepting where you are in life and seeking therapy provides long-lasting tools to avoid triggers, redirect unhelpful patterns, and overcome difficult obstacles.

People have many different motivations for seeking psychotherapy. Some are navigating major life transitions (such as career changes, divorce, or relocation), while others need assistance managing low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, addictions, or relationship challenges. In short, people seeking psychotherapy are ready to meet life's challenges and make positive, lasting changes.

Because each person has different goals, therapy is personalized to the individual. In general, you can expect to discuss current life events, relevant personal history, and report progress from previous sessions. Depending on your needs, therapy can be short-term for a specific issue or longer-term for deeper personal growth. Sessions are typically scheduled weekly.

Long-term mental and emotional well-being cannot be solved solely by medication. Instead of just managing symptoms, psychotherapy addresses the root causes of distress and the behavioral patterns that curb progress. Working collaboratively with your medical doctor, you can determine what is best, and in many cases a combination of medication and therapy provides the most effective approach.

Allen Counseling Group, PLLC is private pay only. Insurance is not accepted for now, making it more comfortable for clients who do not want pre-existing conditions to be an issue for them in the future. To determine if you have mental health coverage through your insurance carrier, you can call them directly and ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits and reimbursement amounts.

We require at least 48 hours advance notice if you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours notice, or missed appointments, are billed at the full session rate.

Confidentiality is one of the most important components between a client and psychotherapist. Successful therapy requires a high degree of trust with highly sensitive subject matter that is usually not discussed anywhere but the therapist's office. Every therapist should provide a written copy of their confidential disclosure agreement, and you can expect that what you discuss in session will not be shared with anyone. This is called “Informed Consent”. Sometimes, however, you may want your therapist to share information or give an update to someone on your healthcare team (your Physician, Naturopath, Attorney), but by law your therapist cannot release this information without obtaining your written permission. However, state law and professional ethics require therapists to maintain confidentiality except for the following situations: * Suspected past or present abuse or neglect of children, adults, and elders to the authorities, including Child Protection and law enforcement, based on information provided by the client or collateral sources. * If the therapist has reason to suspect the client is seriously in danger of harming him/herself or has threatened to harm another person.
